Hidden Truths
Hidden Truths is a deeply personal project to Nina Bethany as not only, is it so far, self-portraiture but displays her own truth in an expression of owning. In 2022 Nina underwent spinal surgery leaving 2 metal rods and 18 screws in her back, in result it isn’t hard to believe that it leaves physical difficulties. This series of work shows the more physical visible remnants of this surgery surrounding the truth people assume to know just by looking at her every day.
This project is here to express how we shouldn’t judge people just on how they look as you don’t know what people have and are suffering through. This work is here to showcase what is initially hidden on a day-to-day basis, showing the hidden truths people live and sufferer through without the world knowing. She hopes to progress this series over the years, enabling her to explore and uncover other people’s truths to help them feel more seen and understood.
The catalyst for ‘Hidden Truths’ developing forward into what is has become was a compilation of people constantly judging a seemingly young and healthy lady siting down all the time especially on public transport. Along with a judgemental comment from a coworker of Nina Bethany’s “What your 20 with back problems!?” The simple answer to this is “Yes” and now it is “Do you want to see it?”.
This series was Nina Bethanys fist series she put up for exhibition in a public space the event went well and many people came to view the project.
